In
No Limit Texas Holdem, players must make the best five card poker hand
possible. The ranking order of poker hands is not effected by the
card suit as hearts, spades, clubs and diamonds have equal status. Nicknames
have been created over the years for poker hands. |

Rank
of poker hands |
1
- Royal Flush |
||
All five cards must be the same suit. A five card run starting at 10 and ending on an Ace. The Royal Flush is the highest poker hand. Any other run of same suited cards is a straight flush.
2
- Straight Flush |
|||
All five cards must be the same suit and in number order. Aces can be low in this situation and A-2-3-4-5 is a valid hand. Runs cannot cross through the Ace e.g. Q-K-A-2-3 is illegal.
3 - Four of a kind |
|||
Four cards of the same value. Four aces is the highest four of a kind hand. Four 2's is the lowest four of a kind hand. The fifth card is not important.
4
- Full House |
|||
The full house is a combination of a three of a kind and a pair. The three of a kind element is the important part, as this dictates who wins the hand. The pair is secondary.
5
- Flush |
|||
All five cards must be the same suit. The cards are not in number order. If the cards were in number order the hand would be a straight flush.
6
- Straight |
|||
Cards are of mixed suits. The five cards are in number order. Aces can be low in this situation and A-2-3-4-5 is a valid hand. Runs cannot cross through the Ace e.g. Q-K-A-2-3 is illegal.
7
- Three of a kind |
|||
Three cards of the same value. If two players have three of a kind, the highest value three of a kind wins the hand. In some casino rules, the one with this hand is entitled to the poker bonus.
8
- Two pairs |
|||
Two pairs of cards which are the same value. The higher value pair is the important part, as this dictates who wins the hand. The low pair is only used if players have the same high pair.
9
- One Pair |
|||
One pair of cards which are the same value. The remaining three cards are used if players have the same high pair. The player with the highest remaining card wins.
10
- High card |
|||
A player cannot make a poker hand. The highest single card. If players have the same high card, the second highest card is used. If still a draw, the third, fourth and fifth are used.
The concept of five card poker hands is important. Each card has a value. If hands are tied e.g. players with the same high pair, the remaining cards are used. In the event of a tie on all five cards, the chip pot is split evenly between the players left contesting the hand.

Canine
- K9 |
|||
According to Sklansky the canine is in the lowest group of starting hands (8). Definately the bark is worse than the bite. Play this hand too aggressively or too often and you will end up in the poker pet cemetary.
Kojak
- KJ |
|||
Who loves ya baby? Well Sklansky scores this smooth pairing a 3. Looks alot better than it plays. If too many people in the hand, you are always vulnerable to an Ace. Has a habit of making your lolly go pop!
Mowtown
- J5 |
|||
Sklansky doesnt even give this a ranking! It aint no love machine. But one Poker Jokers member plays this all in every time. Its his lucky hand. Unfortunately for him, this poker hand guarantees the tears of a clown.
Snowmen
- 88 |
|||
The infamous Snowmen. Ranked a surprisingly icy 4 by Sklansky. Always at risk of being over paired by higher cards. But not many players can resist the festive spirit. Walking in the air without a safety net.
Big
Slick - AK |
|||
The only Sklansky rank one hand in our list. However, this hand only gets dealt 1.2% of the time and even then doesn't guarantee striking it rich! Stay calm, take a deep breath and tap the poker chips well.
Dead
Mans Hand - A8 |
|||
Made famous by Wild Bill Hickock. Sklansky rating 5. This hand really does do exactly what it says on the tin. But don't be too quick on the draw. The Dead Mans Hand is all too often shot down by a higher kicker card.
