Hall of Fame: The Queen Mother
May 31st, 2003, 9:29am

On the 30 March 2002, the Queen Mother died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 101.

One of the Queen Mother's passions was horseracing, and she was regarded as the first lady of the steeplechase for more than four decades. She saw her horses win at least 400 times at major races thanks to a variety of trainers and jockeys.

But she will be best remembered for the 1956 Grand National in which her horse, Devon Loch, was leading, only to collapse yards from the line. He half-leapt just 50 yards from the finish, sprawling and unseating his jockey, thingy Francis, and leaving the crowd stunned.

Although still dogged by ill luck in the big races, the Queen Mother reached a high point in the 1964-65 season when she had 27 wins, making her the third most successful owner that year.

The highlight of the Queen Mothers racing career came in 1984 when Special Cargo won the Whitbread Gold Cup, coming from a seemingly impossible position at the last to snatch victory in a three-way photo-finish. She found herself receiving the trophy she had agreed to present.

Even on an income of millions per year, she ran up debts of over 4,000,000.

Late private secretary and long-term friend Sir Martin Gilliatt said: "I suppose the Queen Mother would be considered rather an unlucky owner.

Let's not forget the the old girl liked a gin or two!

Apparently during the 6 hour coronation service of her daughter, several empty bottles of gin, brandy, whisky and other assorted booze wwasfound deposited in the stalls at Westminsterby cleaners after the ceremony.

No doubt this gambling boozehound had some part to play.

God bless her!

in to the bladder'. That's how she was, a fighter, who refused to be beaten
by anything. She pissed herself later though, it was sickening". B.

 "How refreshing
to be able to mourn the death of a member of the Royal family without being
accused of being homosexual". J. Fletcher, High Wycombe.

act as a warning to others who think it is cool to experiment with drugs".

----------------------------------------------------------
 "On behalf on all
blacks, I send the sincerest condolences". T.Watson, Ilford.
----------------------------------------------------------
 "Perhaps if we
automated her old golf buggy it could still drive around The Mall on its own
and bring pleasure to the tourists". Y. Howell, Slough.
----------------------------------------------------------
 "Once again the
Queen is not upset enough for my liking, the woman should have a bit more
compassion, how would she feel if it was her mother?" W.Waugh, Richmond.
----------------------------------------------------------
 "It is such a
loss, God has shat on our heads". K. O'Neil, Inverness.
----------------------------------------------------------
